Before committing to the move
Set a household budget and a fallback plan
List the income available on your moving date, rather than the benefits you might receive later. Price housing, healthcare, transport and return flights. Keep deposits and moving costs outside the monthly spending budget.
Confirm the residence route
Use the consular instructions for your address and the official document list. Ask how income, accompanying family members, accommodation and insurance must be documented. Verify appointment arrangements directly before paying an intermediary.
Get advice on Canadian departure and Portuguese tax
Give the adviser an account inventory, cost bases, pension statements, property details and intended dates. Ask for a departure-year estimate and an ongoing-year estimate. Tax residence depends on your circumstances; a postal-address change alone does not settle it. Consult the CRA's emigrant guidance.
Confirm benefits, banking and health coverage
Ask Service Canada about payments abroad and ask each financial institution about servicing a Portuguese resident. Confirm the end of provincial coverage and the start of replacement coverage. Document answers, contact names and any required forms.
Prepare and submit the application
Make a document tracker with four columns: requirement, issuing authority, expiry date and status. This helps avoid obtaining a time-limited document too early. Check whether translation or authentication is required for each document.
Arrange accommodation on terms you understand, including deposits, cancellation and the consequences of a delayed move. Verify the landlord and property before transferring money. Follow the current consular submission procedure and keep a copy of the complete application.
Ask when to obtain a Portuguese tax number and whether representation is required for your circumstances. Do not treat a tax number, bank account or property purchase as permission to reside.
After approval and arrival
- Follow the residence-permit instructions and record appointment and renewal dates. Keep proof of submissions and communications.
- Complete the relevant local registrations, arrange healthcare and establish a plan for prescriptions and urgent care.
- Update payers and financial institutions with the correct residence and tax information. Reconcile the first deposits against your budget.
- Set aside tax money and confirm filing obligations in each country. IFICI eligibility should be assessed only where relevant to your activities.
- Review actual spending after three months. Adjust withdrawals and discretionary expenses before a recurring shortfall becomes a large portfolio drawdown.
A useful first-year calendar
Use actual dates from your documents, not a generic promise that the process takes a fixed number of months. Include the visa validity period, residence appointments, lease dates, insurance renewal, Canadian and Portuguese filing deadlines and planned trips home.
Citizenship is a separate legal process with its own requirements. Check the rules in force when applying rather than assuming that a particular period of residence automatically produces a passport.
Before booking the move, return to the readiness checklist and resolve any missing evidence.
