Our Mission

Most Canadians don't have access to a financial planner. The tools that do exist are either too simple (one-slider "how long will your money last" calculators) or too complex (actuarial spreadsheets built for professionals). CanIRetireCanada.ca bridges that gap — providing comprehensive, Canadian-specific retirement analysis that's accessible to everyone, for free.

We cover the full picture: CPP optimization, OAS clawback strategy, RRSP meltdown, TFSA sequencing, provincial tax differences, defined benefit pensions, and retiring abroad — all in one place. Our 50+ in-depth guides cover everything from CPP timing strategy to retiring in Portugal.

Canadian-Specific Calculations

Planning estimates reflect simplified Canadian benefit and tax assumptions. Confirm the reference period and your personal entitlements before relying on a result.

Our Methodology

Retirement Readiness Score: Calculated as a funding ratio (projected portfolio vs. target portfolio) blended with an income surplus/shortfall measure. Scaled 0–100. The score is a simplified indicator, not a validated probability of retirement success.

CPP Estimates: Uses a simplified contribution and earnings estimate; compare the applicable maximum rates with (Service Canada CPP benefit amounts). Actuarial reduction/deferral factors applied per CPP regulations: 0.6%/month before 65 (max 36% reduction at 60), 0.7%/month after 65 (max 42% increase at 70). For exact figures, check your My Service Canada Account.

OAS: Calculated at the maximum monthly rate for age 65 per Service Canada OAS benefit amounts (with a deferral adjustment where applicable). The official OAS recovery-tax threshold for 2026 income is $95,323; the July 2026–June 2027 withholding period instead uses the 2025 threshold of $93,454 (see CRA).

Tax Calculations: Use 2026 federal and provincial marginal tax rates per the CRA personal income tax rates. Simplified to primary income brackets — for exact figures, consult the CRA or a licensed tax professional.

Safe Withdrawal Rate: Default 4% is a planning assumption, not a guaranteed safe rate. Adjustable in the calculator. Note: the 4% rule was developed with US equity/bond data and a 30-year horizon. Canadian retirees should consider sequence-of-returns risk, particularly for early retirees with 35+ year horizons.

Inflation Adjustment: The main calculator defaults to 2.5% inflation (adjustable), which is a planning assumption above the Bank of Canada's 2% inflation target.

CanIRetireCanada.ca provides general financial information for educational purposes only. This is not financial, tax, investment, or legal advice. Retirement projections are estimates based on assumptions that may differ significantly from actual outcomes. CPP and OAS figures are approximations — always verify with Service Canada (My Service Canada Account). Tax calculations are simplified — consult the CRA or a licensed tax professional for exact figures. Cross-border tax situations (retiring abroad) are particularly complex — always consult a cross-border CFP or tax specialist. Past investment performance does not guarantee future results.
