Can I Retire in Portugal? Check These Four Gaps
Assess residence documents, dependable income, the full household budget and healthcare before deciding that Portugal is affordable.

1. Does your evidence support a residence application?
Start with the consulate's residence visa instructions and the current means-of-subsistence reference. Record the applicable amount in euros, the family members included and the documents needed to demonstrate income. Confirm how your consular post assesses variable investment withdrawals.
Do not compare an annual Canadian-dollar pension with a monthly euro requirement. Convert both to the same currency and period, then check the documentation rules. A pension larger than an income reference does not settle accommodation, insurance or the other parts of the application.
2. Will the income actually be available?
| Income source | Evidence to gather | Gap to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| CPP or OAS | Your benefit statement and intended start date | Payments before the start date, eligibility abroad and deductions |
| Employer pension | Plan estimate for the date you leave work | Early-retirement reductions, bridge payments and survivor options |
| RRSP, RRIF or investments | Balances and a sustainable withdrawal plan | Taxes, market losses and whether withdrawals satisfy the visa evidence rules |
| Rental income | Lease, expenses and vacancy allowance | Management, repairs, withholding and interruption of rent |
If you retire before your pensions start, write a separate budget for that gap. For example, five years of CAD $36,000 spending is CAD $180,000 before inflation, tax and investment returns. A future pension does not pay today's rent.
3. Is there a surplus after both countries' taxes?
Use an estimate of total tax prepared for your household. Do not enter a flat 15% deduction and treat the rest as spendable income. The correction notice above explains why earlier IFICI-based examples on this site should not be used.
Subtract housing, food, utilities, transport, medical costs, flights, Canadian commitments and a contingency reserve. Test a less favourable exchange rate. If the plan only balances under the most optimistic assumptions, reduce the committed expenses or delay the move.
The Portugal overview shows a worked currency and spending example you can adapt.
4. Can you manage a disruption?
Ask what happens if residence processing takes longer than expected, private insurance excludes a condition or you need to return to Canada at short notice. Keep accessible money for those events, separate from your normal investment withdrawals.
A useful readiness file contains the current consular checklist, actual benefit statements, housing and insurance quotes, a written tax estimate, a monthly budget and a return plan. Unresolved items in that file are the next tasks to complete—not reasons to assume the move is impossible.
